“You may not eat all of them. Your mother gets some.” That’s what my husband said to me tonight after he cooked up some beautiful chanterelles he had foraged the day before. I love that. Taking care of my mom is important to him. All of us sharing our daily experiences and “mushrooms” is part and parcel of our life together and I feel so lucky to have such a wonderful husband and mother. I know my husband appreciates all the support my mom has been in helping raise our children, and my mom recognizes how hard my husband works for our family. They have their own unique relationship and yes, like everyone, they do butt heads occasionally. But I truly think our household works because we came together 16 years ago for the right reasons: to support each other and live a better life together, separately and 16 years later, I wouldn’t change a thing.
